WELCOME
TO A COMMUNITY ON TRACK
Barstow Is A Small Town With Big City Opportunities
Hub Of The West
The new BNSF Railway rail facility in the City will change the course of Barstow
and North American transportation. Barstow is a proud community with a rich
history and a bright future, and is excited for the dawn of this new era.
The upcoming general plan update will serve to strengthen the local economy
and draw developers and businesses to the area. The new BNSF Rail facilities
will provide additional opportunities for developers and businesses, continuing
the legacy of Barstow as a railroad town, and providing thousands of direct
and indirect well-paying jobs. With some of the most affordable housing in
Southern California, a family-friendly environment, award-winning schools, a
variety of cultural amenities, and an area steeped in history, Barstow is an ideal
place to live, work, and play.

The facility will allow the direct transfer of containers from ships at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to trains for transport through the Alameda Corridor onto the BNSF mainline up to Barstow. Once the containers reach the Barstow International Gateway, they will be processed at the facility using cargo-handling equipment powered by clean energy, and then staged and built into trains moving east via BNSF’s network across the nation. The new facility will bring thousands of direct jobs to California’s high desert communities, reduce highway and port congestion, and maximize rail and distribution efficiency regionally and across the U.S. supply chain.
Situated against the backdrop of the Calico Mountains and the Mojave River, Barstow finds its place in the scenic San Bernardino County of Southern California. Functioning as a vital transportation nexus, the city serves as a gateway bridging the west and east. Its strategic positioning boasts connectivity via two major interstates, linking California to Nevada, Arizona, and beyond. The convenience extends further with the presence of seven airports within a 130-mile radius. With a rich historical tapestry, Barstow bears the marks of centuries past, hosting historic trade routes dating back to the 16th century. Among them, the Old Spanish Trail, stretching 700 miles across six states, connected Los Angeles to Santa Fe, New Mexico. Echoes of the California Silver Rush resonate through Calico Ghost Town, established in 1881. Route 66, a monumental thoroughfare, wove its way into Barstow's history in 1926, traversing over 2,400 miles and uniting urban and rural communities across eight states. Serving as a vital logistics hub, Barstow accommodates Burlington Northern and Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway, a heavyweight in North American freight transportation. Anchoring economic vitality, the city houses the Marine Corps Logistics Base and maintains proximity to the Fort Irwin National Training Center, both robust economic drivers.
